Love Letters to Horror Movies

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) d: Scott Glosserman

One Cut of the Dead (2017) d: Shinichirou Ueda

Behind the Mask shows up on a ton of underrated horror gem lists. It’s a mockumentary set in a world where classic horror slashers like Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees are real, and we follow titular fanboy Leslie Vernon in his quest to follow in their footsteps. It’s clever and original – a rare treat for a meta-horror comedy.

The less you know about One Cut of the Dead, the better. Just, watch it until the end. I have shown it to several people who have seriously questioned my taste and judgement for the first half hour, but it has never disappointed in the end. I promise, it’s delightful.
