Dangerous Teens (with a side of social commentary!)
A generational changing of the guard
The Girl with all the Gifts (2016) d: Colm McCarthy
Attack the Block (2011) d: Joe Cornish
Battle Royale (2000) d: Kinji Fukasaka
You’d be excused for yawning at the thought of yet another zombie flick, but The Girl with All the Gifts takes the concept and goes somewhere really interesting. The ending is really special, but I think it’s best to go into it with minimal information, so off you go!
Attack the Block gave the world John Boyega, so let’s thank it for that. This one is a bit more sci-fi/action flick than true horror, but that line gets blurred all the time. It’s a blast, but it’s also got a lot to say – check these out after you’ve seen it.
Cult classic Battle Royale is like Lord of the Flies meets Hunger Games meets Kill Bill (actually it heavily influenced the last). You get black humor, lots of blood, and a fast-paced allegory of the hyper-competitive Japanese school system! (Here’s a little bit more history about it if you liked it)
