Movies in which CORN Plays a Pivotal Role
Yes, corn.
Troll 2 (1990) d: Claudio Fragasso
Sleepwalkers (1992) d: Mick Garris
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) d: Stephen Chiodo
Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995) d: James D.R Hickox
Y’all, this is the collection I’m proudest of putting together. What a truly nonsense idea. Troll 2 is one of my favorite movies. I’ve seen it dozens of times. It is notorious, but if you somehow have never heard of it, it’s not a sequel, it’s not about Trolls, and it’s always included in lists of the best bad movies. There is an incredible non-sexual sexual scene that features corn on the cob and popcorn. It’s a masterpiece.
Sleepwalkers is an odd movie, mostly because of its inconsistency of tone, vacillating unpredictably from sad and serious to goofy fun. But it’s still well worth a watch. Alice Krige is acting her heart out in this, she’s frankly too good for the movie she’s in. Also, check out this towering cameo list: Stephen King, Tobe Hooper, Clive Barker, John Landis, Joe Dante, and the one and only Mark Hamill. I’m not going to tell you where the corn comes in, but you’re not exactly going to miss it.
Chances are if you grew up loving Blockbuster, you remember being traumatized by the VHS cover of cult classic, Killer Klowns from Outer Space. As you can probably guess, it’s not as much scary as it is absurd. That being said, those clowns are genuinely creepy when they laugh. The most expensive prop of the production is a popcorn bazooka that has some fun surprises in store.
OK, so probably any of the Children of the Corn films (good lord there are 9) could be on this list, but we’ve got to go with Urban Harvest for a few reasons: This is allegedly the only low budget adaptation of Stephen King’s works that he actually likes; it’s Charlize Theron’s first (uncredited) film role; but most importantly, it’s the only one in the series where the corn itself is an active participant. Incredible.
